Blue Bio is a strategic approach to consolidate the Swedish and Norwegian expertise in marine biotech, a strategic dialogue bridge between sister organisation 'MareNovum’ from Sweden and ‘MareLife’ from Norway.
MedCoast instrumental
“MARINN” is the working title of a Swedish- Norwegian collaboration aimed at defining and managing a Scandinavian marine biotechnology competence platform, building on the strong research and entrepreneurial spirit within this area. MedCoast Scandinavia, MareLife and its counterpart in Sweden, Mare Novum, have been instrumental in these efforts.
A broad Scandinavian marine approach
Blue Bio (Blå Bioteknik för Hållbara Innovationer) is a two-year project within the EU Interreg programme (IVA Kattegat-Skagerrak).
It is a cross-border project in the Kattegatt-Skagerack region working towards knowledge-based development and integration of research and industry.
The goal is to find sustainable ways of exploiting the marine environment. Lead partners are Göteborg University in Sweden and MareLife in Norway.
The project is aiming at:
- transforming the region into a leading attractive environment where knowledge based development is the basis for a sustainable industry.
- taking a broad marine approach to facilitate development of industrial production of foods, functional foods and feeds from traditional raw material (fish and shell fish from aquaculture and fisheries) as well as from new sources such as microalgae – an important model component for Blue Bio.
- coordinating academic competencies with industry and public sector to advance the marine sector in a robust and sustainable way.
- establishing an innovation platform with emphasis on early phase commercialisation, with focus on selected innovative cases.
- making visible the unique potential in the marine sector around the waters of Scandinavia.
